Restoration of Ecosystems in Tsunami affected areas around the confluence of the right arm of Periyar River
Supported by Green Coast- Wetlands International.

Summary
This eco-restorative process aim to nurse-back-to health the soil, water and biodiversity resources degraded during the tidal attack. The locations selected for this project are two islands - Sathar Island and Valiya Panickar Island situated at the confluence of Periyar River with the Arabian Sea.

Objective:
• To protect and conserve estuarine islands through eco-restoration processes
• To improve water potential for domestic purposes in traditional water sources
• To promote sustainable livelihoods of people

Planting of mangroves is envisaged to form a bio-shield, to stabilize the selected margins of the island and also to act as a buffer against erosion.

At the select household level, injection of rainwater into the contaminated wells and construction of radial channels into domestic wells lead to increased recharging of rainwater thus enabling improved access for domestic water needs. Rejuvenation of traditional ponds through cleaning up of the contaminants (saline water and sea bottom mud that entered along with Tsunami waves) which enable enhanced water security and in sustaining water quality.
Ensuring livelihood security by making value addition to conventional screw pine craft practiced by women in the area. The above activities will bring about a sustainable intervention by the integration of above technologies that orient towards rejuvenation of the degraded ecological base. All the processes are being evolved in consultation with the intended communities.
